One observational study links more frequent AI use with lower critical-thinking scores

In a single-author mixed-methods study of 666 participants, more frequent self-reported AI-tool use correlates with lower critical-thinking scores and greater cognitive offloading. The analysis identifies cognitive offloading as a statistical mediator. Younger participants report greater dependence on AI tools and have lower critical-thinking scores than older participants.

What it supports

An association worth testing further between AI use patterns, cognitive offloading, and measured critical-thinking engagement.

Boundary

The study is cross-sectional and relies on self-reported AI use. It cannot establish that AI use causes lower critical thinking, cognitive decline, neurological change, or poorer workplace performance. A September 2025 correction replaces Table 4, which had mistakenly duplicated Table 3; the author states that the scientific conclusions are unaffected.
